Job Description

China Institute in America is seeking a Gallery Director to implement the artistic identity and vision for the Gallery, plan exhibitions, and represent the institute locally and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise gallery staff, outside specialists, and vendors for successful exhibition projects.
  • Oversee production of at least two exhibitions annually with publications, education programs, and media exposure.
  • Build relationships with museums, scholars, and Chinese art world for quality exhibition proposals.
  • Manage and balance Gallery's budget, secure funding through donors, and oversee exhibition catalogs.
  • Author materials, work on marketing, and participate in programming and events.
  • Represent the Gallery within academic and arts community, drive donor cultivation opportunities, and recruit Gallery Committee members.
  • Design and develop short period art shows leveraging Institute's space outside of the Gallery.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: University bachelor's degree in related field, 5-7 years of work experience in related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications: PhD in art history, extensive curatorial experience.

  • Knowledge of museum best practices and academic museum trends.
  • Effective staff management and mentorship skills.
  • Promote teamwork, develop diverse Gallery audiences, and work positively with stakeholders.
  • Strong written/oral communication skills.
