Job Description

John D. Dingell VA Medical Center is seeking a Nursing Assistant to provide care within the Medicine Unit, Nursing Section of the Detroit VAMC. The role involves working with adults and geriatric veterans with acute conditions.

Responsibilities

Utilize glucose monitoring machine for veterans
Provide direct care for complex patients
Observe changes in patient's condition
Document care given and observations
Respond to patient changes and contact appropriate staff
Administer tracheostomy care and monitor patient intake/output
Perform nursing procedures within scope of practice
Work with patients on small group activities
Promote patient independence and autonomy
Participate in treatment planning meetings
Utilize equipment for patient self-care
Provide patient information to the treatment team
Maintain a clean, safe environment for patients
Serve as a safe patient handling liaison and mentor to other NAs
Intervene in patient behavior and initiate basic life support

Qualifications

U.S. Citizenship
Proficient in English
Completion of education or training related to Nursing Assistant role
Ability to provide patient care and contribute to care plans
Effective communication skills
Ability to observe patient status and refer deviations to supervisor
Knowledge of equipment and materials used in patient care
