How to write a resume that gets shortlisted

A recruiter usually skims a resume before reading it. Make the parts they look for easy to find, and back up what you say with facts.

1. Contact details

Put your full name at the top, then one line with your city, phone number and an email address you check every day. Use a plain email made from your name, not a nickname. Add a LinkedIn or portfolio link only if it is up to date. Your full home address and date of birth are not needed.

2. Summary

Write two or three lines on who you are, what you are good at and the job you want. Name the role and one or two skills from the job post. Freshers can mention their degree and a project or internship; experienced people should lead with years of experience and one result. Skip phrases like “hard-working team player” that every resume has.

3. Experience, with numbers

List jobs and internships with the latest first: job title, company, city and dates. Under each, write two to five points that start with a verb and show a result, such as “Handled 60 customer calls a day”, “Cut stock errors by 15%” or “Trained 4 new joiners”. Numbers make a claim believable and are easy to spot when someone skims.

4. Education

Start with your highest qualification: degree, college, years and your grade if it is good. After a few years of work, the degree alone is enough. Still studying? Write the expected year, such as “2026 (expected)”.

5. Skills

List the tools and skills the job asks for that you can really use, such as Excel, SQL or a second language. Use the exact words from the job post where they are true for you, because recruiters and ATS software search for them. Leave out anything you could not answer interview questions on.

6. Projects, if you are a fresher

With little or no work experience, projects are your proof. Include college and final-year projects, freelance or volunteer work: what you built or did, the tools you used and the result. Add a link to the work (GitHub, a portfolio or a live site) if you have one.

Resume format for freshers

Keep a fresher's resume to one page, in one column, in this order:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Summary (two or three lines)
  3. Projects
  4. Internships and part-time work
  5. Education, with your scores
  6. Skills
  7. Certifications, languages and achievements

Make your resume ATS-friendly

Many employers and job portals put applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS), which reads the text of your resume. These rules keep it readable:

  • Use one column of plain text. Tables, text boxes, photos, icons and skill bars confuse the software. Every resume from this builder follows this rule.
  • Use standard headings such as Experience, Education and Skills, so the software knows where each part starts.
  • Use the job post's words for skills and job titles where they truthfully describe you.
  • Send a PDF made from text, like the ones this builder makes, or a Word file. A scan or a photo of a printed resume cannot be read.
  • Write dates the same way everywhere, for example “Jun 2023 – Present”.
  • Keep your name and contact details in the main body of the page, not in a header or footer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this resume builder free?
Yes. You can make, download and copy as many resumes as you like. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no paid download.
Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
What you type is saved only in this browser on this device, so you can close the page and carry on later. It is not sent to TownTasks's servers, and the PDF is made in your browser too. Clearing your browser data or using a private window removes it, so keep a copy of the PDF.
What is the best resume format for freshers?
A one-page, single-column resume in this order: name and contact details, a two- or three-line summary, projects and internships, education with your scores, skills, then certifications, languages and achievements. Projects and internships go near the top because they show you can do the work.
How long should a resume be?
One page for freshers and for most people with up to about five years of experience. Two pages is fine if you have more experience that is relevant to the job. Cut anything that does not help you get the job you are applying for.
Should I add a photo to my resume?
Usually not. Many employers prefer resumes without photos, and ATS software ignores them. Add one only if the job post or local practice asks for it. This builder does not add photos.
What is an ATS-friendly resume?
An ATS (applicant tracking system) is software employers use to collect and search job applications. An ATS-friendly resume is one the software can read: plain text in a single column, standard section headings, no tables, images or text boxes, saved as a text-based PDF or Word file. Every resume this builder makes follows these rules.
