How it's calculated
- Notice in days: last working day = resignation date + the number of days − 1, when the resignation day counts as day 1. Otherwise it is the resignation date + the number of days. A week is 7 days.
- Notice in months: add the months to the resignation date (1 October + 1 month = 1 November), then take off one day when the resignation day counts as day 1 (31 October). If that date doesn't exist in the later month, the month's last day is used first: 31 January + 1 month = 28 February (29 in a leap year), so the last day is 27 February.
- Calendar days count every day, weekends and holidays included.
- Buyout ≈ monthly pay ÷ 30 × the days you leave early, less any leave days your employer agrees to set off.
Your notice period comes from your employment contract, and employment law where you work may set a minimum. Whether you can pay instead of working your notice, and how much, depends on the contract; get any agreement in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out my last working day?
Count the notice from the day you resign. With 30 days' notice and the resignation day counted as day 1, resigning on 1 October 2026 makes Friday, 30 October 2026 your last working day. If your notice starts the day after you resign, it is Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Is one month's notice the same as 30 days?
Not always. Notice in months ends the day before the same date in the later month. Resigning on 15 January 2027 with two months' notice makes 14 March 2027 your last day (59 days), while 60 days' notice ends on 15 March 2027. When the later month is shorter, the month's last day is used: one month from 31 January 2027 ends on 27 February 2027.
Do weekends and public holidays count in the notice period?
This calculator counts calendar days, so weekends and public holidays count. If your contract counts working days instead, your last day will be later. Read the notice clause in your contract or appointment letter.
What is a notice period buyout?
Paying your employer for the notice days you do not work, so you can leave early; a new employer sometimes pays it for you. This calculator takes a day's pay as monthly pay ÷ 30. On monthly pay of $3,000, leaving 20 days early costs about $2,000; if 5 days of leave are set off, $1,500. Your contract says whether basic or gross pay is used.
Can I use my leave to shorten my notice period?
Some employers let you set earned leave against the notice period and some do not; it depends on your contract and the leave policy. Ask HR in writing before you plan around it.
How long is a notice period?
Your employment contract sets it, and employment law where you work may set a minimum. Check your contract before you resign, and give notice in writing.
