How it's calculated

  1. Regular pay: up to 40 hours at your hourly rate.
  2. Overtime: each hour over 40 in the workweek at 1.5 times your regular rate.
  3. Daily states: hours over the daily limit are overtime even in a short week (California after 8 hours, double time after 12; Alaska after 8 hours; Nevada after 8 hours, for pay under $18 an hour; Colorado after 12 hours). Hours are never counted twice. Oregon pays daily overtime in manufacturing only, which this calculator leaves out.
  4. Two rates in one week: the regular rate is your straight-time pay for all hours divided by all hours; overtime is paid at 1.5 times that average.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is time and a half for $18 an hour?
$27 an hour: $18 × 1.5. A 50-hour week pays 40 × $18 = $720 plus 10 × $27 = $270, $990 in all.
When do I get overtime?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees get at least one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado also count overtime by the day.
How does daily overtime work in California?
Hours over 8 in a workday are paid at time and a half, and hours over 12 at double time; the 40-hour weekly rule still applies. A 13-hour day at $20 an hour pays $160 + $120 (4 hours at $30) + $40 (1 hour at $40) = $320. California also has seventh-day rules this calculator leaves out.
Is overtime taxed more?
No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as other pay; it just adds to your income for the year. $18 an hour with 10 hours of overtime every week takes home $848.18 a week (single, federal taxes) against $620.44 without overtime.
Is there no tax on overtime now?
Partly. For tax years 2025 to 2028 you can deduct the extra half of time-and-a-half pay (the premium above your regular rate) from your federal taxable income, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 if married filing jointly), less 10% of income above $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Social Security, Medicare and state taxes still apply. At $18 an hour with 10 overtime hours a week the premium is $4,680 a year, which saves about $561.60 of federal tax in the 12% bracket. Your employer may still withhold tax on it during the year; you get it back when you file, or sooner by updating your W-4.
Who does not get overtime?
Exempt employees: mainly salaried executives, administrators and professionals paid at least $684 a week ($35,568 a year) whose duties meet the federal tests. Some states set a higher salary. Most hourly workers in the trades, warehouses, driving and security are non-exempt.
What if I work at two different rates in one week?
The overtime rate is based on your average rate for the week. 30 hours at $18 and 15 hours at $22 average $19.33 an hour, so the 5 overtime hours pay $145 and the week $918.33.
