Frequently Asked Questions

How much PTO do I earn per hour worked?
Divide the yearly PTO by the hours you work in a year. 80 hours (two weeks) over 2,080 hours is 0.0385 hours of PTO per hour worked, or 3.08 hours every two-week paycheck.
How much PTO is 1 hour for every 30 hours worked?
At 40 hours a week it comes to 69.33 hours a year, about 8.67 eight-hour days. This is the most common paid sick leave rate in state and city laws.
How many days is 80 hours of PTO?
10 working days of 8 hours, or two weeks for a full-time worker.
How long until I have 40 hours saved?
Divide the hours you still need by the hours you earn each paycheck and round up. With 20 hours saved and 4 hours a paycheck you reach 40 hours in 5 paychecks.
What is a PTO cap and carryover limit?
A cap stops your balance growing past a maximum; you earn nothing more until you use some. A carryover limit is how much you can keep into the next year. With 120 hours a year, 100 saved, a 160-hour cap and 40 hours of carryover, you would lose about 120 hours at year end if you take none. Some states, such as California, do not allow use-it-or-lose-it policies.
Is unused PTO paid out when I leave?
It depends on your state and your employer's written policy. A few states require unused vacation to be paid out; in many others the policy decides. Check before you give notice.
